The ketogenic diet (also called the keto diet) is a low-carbohydrate, high fat and medium protein diet, which is used by many for weight loss. The keto diet works by replacing carbohydrates with fats, which puts the body into ketosis, a natural metabolic state in which the body produces a higher than average level of ketones.
Ketones are produced in the liver from fat and are an alternative source of fuel for the body. When your switches to using keytones are its source of fuel, it is able to easily access and burn off stores of fat, making it a popular diet for weight loss. This is because the human body stores approximately twice as much fat compared to carbohydrates; the carbohydrates are then used to fuel the body and when they have depleted, the body must either replenish the stores of carbohydrates or start burning fat. When the body is in ketosis, it uses fat as its primary fuel sources, making it easier to burn off fat and lose weight.
One way of reaching ketosis is through fasting – however, this is unhealthy and cannot be maintained. The ketogenic diet places the body in ketosis by reducing the amount of carbohydrates in the body and increasing the amount of fats, thus allowing the body to get its fuel from these fats. When the body is in ketosis, blood sugar levels are also much lower than average which has numerous health benefits, including a reduction in the risk of heart disease and healthier teeth.
The Keto diet is similar to other low-carb diets such as the Atkins diet, as they both reduce the body’s intake of carbohydrates, however the keto diet differs in that the goal is to remain in nutritional ketosis beyond weight loss. Another difference between the keto diet and the Atkins diet is that you are given more free range to structure your diet with the keto diet; you are not required to completely cut out certain foods in the way you are with the Atkins diet.
